Senior Exercise Programs

There are several athletic clubs and organizations in the region that seniors can explore. Many fitness programs are also offered through the senior centers and recreation departments of the communities in Southeastern Connecticut.

East Lyme Senior Center

Seniors are welcome to try a fitness class on a trial basis. They can also take part in the Pass System, in which a participant purchases a card with a certain number of classes on it. The East Lyme Senior Center offers classes in chair yoga, P.A.C.E. (People with Arthritis Can Exercise), senior fitness, strength training, tai chi, weight training, yoga, and Zumba. 37 Society Road, Niantic. 860-739-5859,

Griswold Senior Center

Activities at the Griswold Senior Center include aerobics, chair aerobics, line dancing, a walking club, and Zumba. 22 Soule Street, Jewett City. 860-376-2604,

Groton Senior Center

The Groton Senior Center contains a fitness room with stationary bicycles, airdynes, cardio glides, treadmills, and a resistance training circuit. The room is not monitored, so a physician’s clearance is needed before this room can be used. The center also offers a number of fitness programs including aerobics, bowling, exercise for those with arthritis, pickleball, tai chi, Qi Gong, tap dancing, a walking program, yoga, and Zumba. 102 Newtown Road, Groton. 860-441-6785.

Ledyard Senior Center

The Ledyard Senior Center offers bowling, health and wellness programs, and assistance with nutrition. 12 Van Tassell Drive, Gales Ferry. 860-464-0471,

Lisbon Senior Center

The Lisbon Senior Center provides morning exercise programs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 11 Newent Road, Lisbon. 860-376-2329,

Lymes’ Senior Center

Exercise classes are offered at the Lymes’ Senior Center on Monday and Wednesday mornings. Other fitness programs include balance and tone classes, line dancing, a “Sit and Be Fit” class, and tap dancing. 26 Town Woods Road, Old Lyme. 860-434-1605,

Montville Senior Center

Cardiovascular exercise classes take place on Monday and Friday mornings at the Montville Senior Center, regular strength training on Wednesday afternoons, and a combination of both on Monday evenings. The center also offers ballroom dancing, country western dancing, tai chi, yoga, and Zumba. 12 Maple Ave., Uncasville. 860-848-0422,

New London Senior Center

The New London Senior Center holds regular exercise classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. The center also hosts activities for line dancing, pickleball, yoga, and Zumba. 120 Broad Street, New London. 860-447-5232,

Ocean Community YMCA

This organization has branches in Mystic as well as Westerly. The Ocean Community YMCA’s schedule includes a group exercise class designed specifically for senior wellness, as well as senior yoga and senior water workouts. There are also a number of activities offered at different intensities, including cross conditioning, pilates, spin classes, strength and conditioning, and water polo.

Rose City Senior Center

The Rose City Senior Center in Norwich offers a regular Monday and Friday morning aerobics class. The center also hosts activities such as chair yoga, line dancing, pickleball, pilates, strength and flexibility classes, tai chi, yoga, and Zumba. 8 Mahan Drive, Norwich. 860-889-5960,

Silver Sneakers

A nationwide program, Silver Sneakers gives seniors unlimited access to several gyms and fitness centers. The program also includes a number of classes in aquatics, cardiovascular health, yoga, and more.

Valley Shore YMCA

Valley Shore YMCA offers several fitness classes as well as a number of programs specific to seniors, including aquatic exercise, low impact aerobics, pilates, strength and balance, and stretch fusion. 201 Spencer Plain Road, Westbrook. 860-399-9622,
